Historic Win for Transgender People in CT Prisons!

Last week we saw a historic victory for transgender people who are incarcerated with the passage of S.B. 13 An Act Concerning Fair Treatment of Incarcerated Women.

We are the first state to pass a law that protects the safety and dignity of transgender people who are incarcerated by acknowledging a person by their gender identity, providing services, clothing, commissary items, programming and educational materials that are consistent with their gender identity. People will also have the right to be searched by a correctional staff member of the same gender identity and will be placed in a correctional institution which is consistent with their gender identity. Thank you goes to Jennifer Levi, our partner at GLAD, for their legal expertise and drafting the bill language that got passed.

Please join us next Wednesday, May 16 for our statewide community conversation to celebrate this historic win and talk about the issues facing our community and how to get more involved with CT Equality.

Senate Votes NO: Justice McDonald’s Confirmation Defeated

“When you grow up being gay we get used to being different and we understand there is explicit bias and implicit bias. It’s a sad day for many of us in Connecticut.” – Senator Beth Bye during the Senate vote on Justice Andrew McDonald’s nomination for Chief Justice of the CT Supreme Court.

We echo Senator Bye’s comments after the failed confirmation vote for Justice McDonald, who besides being eminently qualified, would have been the first openly gay Chief Justice in the US. But today, we saw partisan politics take hold of the judicial nomination process and the GOP in CT become interchangeable with the GOP down in Washington.

You all fought hard for fairness in this process, writing letters to your legislators, making phone calls, and rallying together to make sure our voices were heard loud and clear. Now it’s time to make them heard one last time by calling our Senators to tell them what their votes meant to you. You can see how your Senator voted here.

CT Senate Republicans 1-800-842-1421

CT Senate Democrats 1-800-842-1420

There is no question that Justice McDonald’s nomination was a huge step forward for LGBTQ+ people not only in CT but everywhere and his confirmation would have solidified that forward movement in a monumental way. Today that momentum was held back but it was not defeated. The work of LGBTQ+ people and our allies will keep marching forward across the country and here at home in CT. We will remember in November and just like we did throughout this entire process,  demand our voices be heard loud and clear.

McDonald Confirmation Vote Expected on Tuesday 3/27

We’re almost there and we can’t stop now – we need you to keep up the pressure to help ensure Justice Andrew McDonald is confirmed as Chief Justice! If confirmed, Justice McDonald will be the first openly gay chief justice in the United States and that matters to our communities. We need a Chief Justice who has the qualifications and experience and we need YOU to make sure your Senator knows where you stand.

While we need calls to every Senator in the General Assembly, we are specifically targeting the list of Senators below ahead of Tuesday’s vote. Call the Senators below on Monday, March 26th and asked them to vote to confirm Justice McDonald.

Senator Kissel: 800-842-1421 (Suffield, Enfield, Somers, East Granby, Windsor, & Windsor Locks)

Thank you for all your energy and hard work – together we can help move this nomination forward!

Urge your Senator to vote YES on Justice Andrew McDonald for Chief Justice!

So many of you took action last week and urged your Senator to vote YES on Justice McDonald’s nomination for Chief Justice of the CT Supreme Court but our work isn’t over yet. You may have already heard the disappointing and outrageous news from Hartford, that yesterday, in a 75-74 vote in House, we saw Connecticut Republicans continue to bring Washington style partisan politics to our state’s judicial selection process. That’s why we need you to do TWO things right now.

  1. We need you to continue to contact your state Senator today and tell them you reject the partisan politics of the House and urge them to vote YES.
  2. We also need to you to send a letter to your House member so they can hear directly from you about their vote on Justice McDonald’s confirmation!

When Justice McDonald was nominated by Governor Malloy, 46 of Connecticut’s most prominent and respected lawyers sent a letter to the legislature that spoke to the dangers of confirming judges based on partisan concerns or because of one decision. They said doing so “threatens the critical component of the checks and balances that undergird our democratic system of government.”

But that is exactly what happened yesterday when 74 House members voted on Justice Andrew McDonald’s confirmation, with every Republican but one – and five Democrats – voting no. We are outraged that the members of the House who voted against McDonald’s confirmation as Chief Justice of the CT Supreme Court did so simply because he was nominated by the sitting Democrat Governor or because of one decision. The fate of Justice Andrew McDonald’s nomination is now in the hands of the Senate and it’s more important than ever that our Senators hear from us!

We need a Chief Justice who has the qualifications and experience and we need YOU to make sure your Senator knows where you stand. Urge your Senator to reject partisan politics and vote YES on Justice McDonald’s confirmation as the next Chief Justice of the CT Supreme Court – today!

One More Thing…

HB 6695 has passed the House with an overwhelmingly bi-partisan vote (151-8!) and has moved through the Senate unanimously! The Governor has signed the bill into law and conversion therapy is officially banned in CT – and we couldn’t have done it with you! We also couldn’t have done it without the support of our legislators in the House and Senate.

We’re asking one more thing of you all, and that’s to quickly reach out and send a note to your legislators one more time about their vote on HB 6695. Whether your legislator was a supporter or one of the representatives to vote against the bill, we want them to know that their vote sent a message to LGBTQ+ people in Connecticut. Take action today and make your voice count one more time on HB 6695!

We are expecting a vote in the House on HB 6695 as early as next week, and we need your voice today! Click here and send your representative a quick letter to tell them how important it is that we protect LGBTQ+ youth in CT! The share with 5 people in your network to help us spread the word before the vote!
